Architecture of Shade / Kinetic Playground

Project Details
Architecture of Shade / Kinetic Playground is an experimental pavilion that invites audiences to explore the relationship between body, space, and the perception of landscape. Developed within a curatorial framework aimed at activating public space at the Oi! at Oil Street courtyard, the project fosters engagement through spatial interaction.
The pavilion operates in two modes. In its everyday state, it functions as a shaded amenity beneath a kinetic canopy that responds to changing environmental conditions. Integrated light and wind sensors enable the structure to adapt dynamically, opening in sunlight and retracting in strong winds for protection. During special events, the pavilion transforms into a performance stage. In collaboration with the local dance group Unlock, choreographed works explore themes of adaptation between natural instincts and man-made systems. Elements of the structure become wearable components equipped with computer vision sensors, while display monitors reveal the system’s graphic interface. Together with colored lighting and ambient sound, these features create an immersive performance environment.
The project was realized through an interdisciplinary collaboration involving architects, engineers, programmers, artists, choreographers, and fabricators, bringing together diverse expertise to deliver a responsive and engaging installation.
