Project Details

The exhibition Transformative Hong Kong for the 18th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale 2023 sought to highlight the city’s architecture community and their approach to sustainable design. Hong Kong’s geographical limitations and high-density urban environment present unique pressures not only on its terrain but also on the architecture community’s approach to design thinking on sustainability. Ultimately the exhibition presents a snapshot of Transformative Hong Kong, a concise architectural exhibition that provides an understanding of the local situation at this particular time and the multifaceted social challenges faced by the architecture and design community in this time.

SKY YUTAKA co-curated and provided exhibition design services, and organised the associated programme and project management of Hong Kong’s ninth participation in the Venice Biennale. In response to the exhibition’s main curatorial theme, “The Laboratory of the Future”, SKY YUTAKA curated 11 exhibits that showcased innovative stories and the evolving urban planning of Hong Kong’s transformation.

The exhibition system was designed to be transformative. Adaptable wooden crates provided flexible and adaptable display modes, making it suitable for various venues. This approach minimises material waste and promotes a reusable display system for travelling exhibitions thereby extending its value. This strategy is particularly beneficial considering the response exhibition in Hong Kong following the main Venice event.
