Heritage of Teacher Education in Hong Kong

SKY YUTAKA designed and delivered an exhibition for EdUHK’s 30th Anniversary using cardboard as the primary material. Installed within a busy market building, it integrates displays for digital media and archival artefacts, embedded lighting, an XR installation on an LED wall, and an AR photobooth kiosk to enhance engagement.

The Heritage of Teacher Education in Hong Kong presents the university’s development over three decades through images, video, and archival material. It is structured into four sections: institutional history, key milestones, achievements, and contributions to teacher ethics and educational values.

Cardboard was used strategically to create an environmentally conscious, modular system enabling rapid assembly within a two-day installation. All components were CNC die-cut from CAD files by a local fabricator to minimise waste, with material quantities carefully tracked throughout prototyping and construction. Structural stability was achieved through triangulation, lattice systems, and folded geometries, including a 2.5 m-high freestanding wall. Much of the material was left exposed, highlighting its natural aesthetic.

In a context where exhibition materials are rarely recycled in Hong Kong, the project prioritises lifecycle thinking and end-of-life reuse. Most components were designed for recyclability, reducing landfill impact. The exhibition aligns with EdUHK’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while promoting awareness of sustainable design practices.
