On Kawara, Rules of Freedom and Freedom of Rules

Project Details
On Kawara: Rules of Freedom, Freedom of Rules is a landmark exhibition at Tai Kwun Contemporary. It showcases five decades of Kawara’s conceptual art that explores time, existence and the tension between structure and freedom. This is the first institutional solo exhibition of his work conceived since his passing in 2014. Curated by Hou Hanru and Ying Kwok with Jill Angel Chun, it presents Kawara’s most iconic series reflecting his lifelong commitment to documenting existence through systematic, rule-based art.
SKY YUTAKA provided exhibition design for the bespoke display system and the One Million Years pavilion installation. A nod to Kawara’s minimalist aesthetics, the vitrine display systems are generated from simple geometries that are often grouped to create distinct zones. Particular attention is given to the varying heights of the vitrines and opening details that encourage visitors to look in, immerse and engage with the work. The design also explored the One Million Years pavilion layout opposite the gallery window to maintain visual connection with the outside. It features a light-box ceiling that illuminates the area for a cinematic effect and a bespoke bench allows visitors to sit by the windows to enjoy the performance.
